The industries in Kerala have a population of 7,200,000 out of a total state population of over 33,44,742.
Besides these there are over 5,000 small industries which have a population of 40,000 and above.
Despite these industries, Kerala is still lagging in industrialization.
There is a rising demand for industrial works but industries are not interested to expand their reach in the state.
Though Kerala has been facing water scarcity for many years, major industrial groups have invested in the north Kerala.
Of late, Kannur and Kollam have become hot-spots for major industries.
Puducherry
Besides a few primary industries and some minor industrial units, Puducherry does not have any industries that produce any value-added product.
Puducherry may be called a holiday destination.
With tourism growing rapidly, Puducherry's role as a port and transport center for the region is becoming increasingly important.
In recent times, Puducherry has developed into a hub of service-based industries such as banking, finance, IT, telecommunication, public utility services, consultancy and aviation, and it is now developing as an electronics manufacturing hub.
The Government of Puducherry has launched a Comprehensive Policy to promote new industries.
This will allow it to have a trade surplus and attract foreign direct investment.
