In Kerala state, the total water availability is about per annum, which is around 21 per cent of the available fresh water.

Another critical factor is the depleting ground water.

About 35 per cent of the total area in the state has no access to any form of surface water.

There are two major groundwater basins of Kerala, one is Cauvery and the other one is the Tungabhadra.

Kerala has been facing groundwater resource crisis.

Kerala has to act in order to secure the growing demand for drinking water.

In the past decades, Kerala used very little groundwater and now, usage is close to capacity.

Farming community is facing severe water crisis.

The popular crops in Kerala are paddy, groundnuts, bananas, coconuts, pepper, castor, tomatoes, watermelons and peppers.

The state’s largest and oldest industries are pharmaceuticals, textiles, ship building, iron- and steel, power, textile chemicals, plastic, paper and steel works, ceramics, plastic, rubber and paper industries, paper and board, food processing and leather and leather goods industries.

The industries in Kerala have a population of 7,200,000 out of a total state population of over 33,44,742.

Besides these there are over 5,000 small industries which have a population of 40,000 and above.

Despite these industries, Kerala is still lagging in industrialization.

There is a rising demand for industrial works but industries are not interested to expand their reach in the state.

Though Kerala has been facing water scarcity for many years, major industrial groups have invested in the north Kerala.

Of late, Kannur and Kollam have become hot-spots for major industries.




Puducherry

Besides a few primary industries and some minor industrial units, Puducherry does not have any industries that produce any value-added product.

Puducherry may be called a holiday destination.

With tourism growing rapidly, Puducherry's role as a port and transport center for the region is becoming increasingly important.

In recent times, Puducherry has developed into a hub of service-based industries such as banking, finance, IT, telecommunication, public utility services, consultancy and aviation, and it is now developing as an electronics manufacturing hub.

The Government of Puducherry has launched a Comprehensive Policy to promote new industries.

This will allow it to have a trade surplus and attract foreign direct investment.
